Why your own opens are not counted

How OpenedYet recognises you viewing your own sent emails.

When you look at an email you sent — in your Sent folder or in a conversation — your browser loads the same tracking image your recipient would. Without care, that would turn your tick green even though nobody else has read it. OpenedYet prevents that.

How it works

  1. When you view one of your tracked emails in Gmail, OpenedYet for Chrome quietly tells our server “this is the sender looking”.
  2. Every open is held for a few seconds (currently 8) before it counts.
  3. If an open lines up with your own view — within 20 seconds — it’s marked as yours and ignored. No green tick, no alert.

When we can’t tell it’s you

Self-open filtering relies on the extension. If you read your sent email somewhere OpenedYet for Chrome isn’t running — the Gmail phone app, another computer without the extension, or a different email app — we can’t tell it’s you, so that view may count as an open.

Tip: on your phone, avoid opening your own tracked emails until the recipient has opened them, or check their status in the OpenedYet dashboard instead.

Testing tracking

Because your own views are ignored, sending yourself an email and opening it in the same browser won’t show ✓✓. Send it to another address you own and open it on a different device.
