Gmail read receipts

Read receipts for Gmail — for any account

Gmail only offers read receipts on some work and school accounts, and the recipient can refuse to send one. Here’s how read receipts in Gmail really work — and how to get one for every email you send.

Does Gmail have read receipts?

Yes — but only for some people. Gmail’s built-in read receipts are part of Google Workspace, the paid version of Gmail for businesses and schools. And they come with three catches:

  • Workspace only. Your administrator has to switch them on. Personal @gmail.com accounts don’t have the option at all.
  • The recipient decides. Many email apps ask the recipient whether to send a receipt. One click on “No” and you’ll never know.
  • One moment, not the story. A receipt tells you about a single open. Not how many times your email was read, not on which device, and not whether anyone clicked your links.

So for most Gmail users the honest answer is: Gmail can’t tell you whether your email was opened. That’s the gap OpenedYet fills.

How to request one in Workspace

If your organisation has enabled them, here’s how to ask for a receipt on a single email:

  1. Click Compose and write your email.
  2. Open the three-dot More options menu at the bottom of the compose window.
  3. Choose Request read receipt, then send.
Don’t see the option? Then your account doesn’t support Gmail’s read receipts. A read-receipt extension like OpenedYet works on every Gmail address, with no admin needed.

How it works

How OpenedYet adds read receipts to Gmail

No settings to dig through and nothing for your recipient to approve.

  1. You send as usual

OpenedYet for Chrome adds a tiny invisible image to your email as it leaves Gmail.

  2. They open it

When their email app shows the message, it loads the image and we record the open. Automatic opens are filtered out.

  3. You see ✓✓

The grey tick next to your email turns green, and an alert tells you it was just opened.

Good to know

What read receipts can’t tell you

Every read-receipt tool works the same basic way, so they share the same limits. We’d rather you hear them from us.

Why an email can look opened when it wasn’t

  • Blocked images hide opens

If the recipient’s app doesn’t load images, the open can’t be seen until they do.

  • Apple Mail opens everything

Apple’s Mail Privacy Protection fetches every message in the background. We flag those opens instead of counting them.

  • Forwarded emails

If your email is forwarded, an open may come from someone else.

  • Opened isn’t the same as read

An open shows the email was displayed. Nobody can prove every word was read.

Setup

Get read receipts in Gmail in two minutes

  1. Add OpenedYet to Chrome from our install page.
  2. Connect your Gmail address. Sign in with Google — we only see your name, email address and picture, never your inbox.
  3. Send an email from Gmail exactly as you normally would.
  4. Watch your Sent folder. A grey ✓ appears straight away. It turns into a green ✓✓ when your email is opened.

FAQ

Gmail read receipts: common questions

How do I turn on read receipts in Gmail?

If you use a Google Workspace account and your administrator has enabled read receipts, open a new email, click the three-dot “More options” menu and choose “Request read receipt”. For a personal @gmail.com account — or a Workspace account without that option — install a read-receipt extension such as OpenedYet. It adds a read receipt to every email automatically.

Can I get read receipts on a personal Gmail account?

Not with Gmail’s own feature — it’s only offered on Workspace accounts. OpenedYet works on personal @gmail.com addresses and Workspace addresses alike.

Do read receipts work if the recipient uses Outlook or Apple Mail?

Yes. OpenedYet doesn’t depend on the recipient’s email app sending anything back. As long as their app shows images, the open is detected — in Gmail, Outlook, Apple Mail, Yahoo and others.

Will the recipient know I used a read receipt?

On the Free plan, a short “Read receipt by OpenedYet” line at the end of your email tells them, with an opt-out link. Paid plans don’t add the line. Either way, any recipient can opt out of tracking on our website.

Are read receipts 100% accurate?

No read receipt is. An open means the email was displayed with its images; it can’t prove every word was read. What we can do is remove the noise: OpenedYet flags Apple Mail auto-opens, filters security scanners and ignores your own views.

Read receipts for every email you send

Works on personal Gmail and Google Workspace. No admin, no approval from the recipient, and a free plan with no time limit.
