Got an email with an OpenedYet read receipt?

Someone sent you an email using OpenedYet, a read-receipt tool for Gmail. Here’s what that means for you, what the sender can see, and how to opt out in under a minute.

Transparency

What the sender can and can’t see

The sender can see

  • that their email was opened, and when;
  • how many times it was opened;
  • roughly what you used: computer or phone, and which email app;
  • which tracked links you clicked, and when.

The sender can’t see

  • your IP address or precise location;
  • anything else in your inbox, or other emails you received;
  • how long you spent reading, or whether you read every word;
  • anything at all once you’ve opted out.

Data

What OpenedYet collects about you

When you open a tracked email, your email app downloads a tiny invisible image from our server. From that request we record:

  • the date and time;
  • the technical name your email app sends (the “user agent”), which tells us the general device type and app;
  • possibly the country, but never a precise location;
  • a scrambled, one-way hash of your IP address — never the address itself.

We also have your email address and name because the sender addressed the email to you. We don’t sell this data, we don’t use it for advertising, and we don’t build profiles of you across different senders. The full details are in our privacy policy.

Opt out

Stop OpenedYet tracking your emails

It takes less than a minute and works straight away.

  1. Open the opt-out page

    Click “Opt out” at the end of the tracked email, or go to openedyet.com/opt-out.

  2. Confirm your address

    Type the email address you received the message at. This stops anyone opting out on your behalf.

  3. Choose and you’re done

    Stop tracking from that sender, or from everyone who uses OpenedYet. Further opens are ignored.

Opt out now

Tip: you can block read receipts from every tool, not just OpenedYet, by turning off automatic image loading in your email app’s settings.

Questions

Questions from recipients

Why did I receive a tracked email?

Someone you know sent you an email from their own Gmail account with OpenedYet installed. OpenedYet isn’t a bulk-email service — the message was written and sent by that person.

Can I opt out of one sender only?

Yes. When you opt out, you choose: stop tracking from that sender only, or from every OpenedYet user.

What happens to opens recorded before I opted out?

They stay in the sender’s history. If you’d like them deleted, email support@openedyet.com from the address that received the email and we’ll take care of it.

Does the tracking image put anything on my device?

No. It’s an ordinary transparent image. It doesn’t install anything and doesn’t set cookies.

I think OpenedYet is being misused.

Please tell us at support@openedyet.com. Using OpenedYet for spam or harassment breaks our terms, and we close accounts that do.

Your data rights — access, deletion, objection — are explained in our privacy policy. Email support@openedyet.com to use them.
